The challenges include lack of food supplements, inferior cooperatives and also shortage of feeds factories in the region.

Speaking from his office, Lari livestock officer, Richard Gachuiri said that his office has put in place measures to address the challenges so as to encourage the farmers to reap maximum profits from their hard work.

He also said that although milk and meat production have declined in the area, his office was now determined to uplift livestock production in the area by ensuring that the farmers have access to the required vaccines for their animals.

“We are planning to set up an animal feeds company in the district which will go a long way in allowing farmers easy access to animal feeds,” said the officer.

He added that farmers will be taught advanced methods of feeding their livestock with quality food supplements in order to achieve their targets,” said Gachuiri.

Gachuiri said that according to research conducted by the livestock ministry in the area, Lari region can produce up to 22 million litres of milk in a year, normal milk production without the use of food supplements.

The livestock officer also added that there were regular meetings organised by cooperatives where farmers are educated on quality and advanced methods of farming which if adopted could multiply their yields.

Gachuiri said that his office had already approved the setting up of an animal feeding project that will help farmers to easily access food supplements without incurring too much costs.

He added that the livestock office has also established good relations with the unions and cooperatives that will buy the farmer’s milk which will help them to secure a reliable market.

“We now look forward to supplying our milk countrywide because our farmers will embrace quality farming,” said Gachuiri.
