Residents of Machani village in Lari constituency have threatened to burn Kijabe forest over what they termed as frequent attacks by monkeys.
The residents claim that regular attacks by monkeys are causing them sleepless nights.
Over the weekend, the residents claim that three monkeys chased a middle-aged woman and she was injured in the process.
Jocelyne Wanjiku, a resident, told our reporter that schoolchildren are the most affected as they get scared away by the monkeys.
She said that their appeal to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to have the monkeys relocated has hit a snag.
“We have on several times complained to KWS over frequent attacks by monkeys but nothing has been done,” said Wanjiku.
Area chief Njoroge Mungai confirmed that the monkeys are causing havoc, adding that large hectares of crops have been destroyed by the animals.
The chief observed that residents have not been able to harvest anything despite the area being productive, adding that they have been forced to guard their farms day and night.
The chief said that he stopped angry residents from burning the forest that neighbours Ngubi and Kinale forests.
Mungai appealed to KWS to move in swiftly and settle the matter. He also asked the wildlife agency to compensate farmers whose crops have been destroyed by the monkeys.
