Police from Lari police station yesterday arrested five young men suspected to be part of a gang terrorising people in Bibirioni, Lari Sub County.
This is following increased police patrols that were put in place after residents in the area reported that an organised group was conducting illegal extortions on people in the area and threatening them.
Lari Sub County OCS chief inspector Peter Ouko, speaking from his office today said that residents have on several occasions reported incidents which have left most people in the area afraid to conduct their daily activities.
He said that the group christened ‘Wenyeji’ has been dreaded by residents as they reap where they have not sown.
Ouko said that residents have complained of the group demanding for money from residents and sometimes threaten those who do not comply.
He noted that the suspects were arrested following a tip out from members of the public yesterday in the evening after they were conducting their activities. Police rushed there and arrested the five suspects.
The OCS said that the operation was not over as they were going to arrest more suspects until the group is completely gone. He said that every citizen has the right to work without being bullied by anyone.
He mentioned that the police will use the five suspects to look for the rest of the gang as there is no place for gangs in Lari.
Ouko added that anyone found aiding illegal groupings is as guilty as they are and will be arrested and prosecuted along with them.
Chief inspector Ouko lauded the members at the public in Bibirioni for helping them apprehend these suspects.
He said that the residents had adopted this positive attitude towards working together with the police and it is working efficiently this far.
