A patient accused of shooting and killing a nurse at Chiromo Lane Medical Centre last week has been remanded for two more weeks.

Trial judge Jessie Lessit ruled on Monday that the accused, Joseph Mungai Njoroge, will stay in detention until he undergoes a mental assessment – a requirement for murder suspects – to ascertain whether he can stand trial.

According to police, Mungai who has a mental condition is believed to have opened fire at the nurse who was attending to him having insisted on keeping his gun after refusing to surrender it to the hospital’s security personnel.

Nairobi Police Chief Japheth Koome who confirmed the incident said that the nurse was shot in the head and died instantly.

The Chairman of the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) Alfred Obengo had threatened to hold demonstrations Monday if the government failed to close the institution.
