Kipipiri lawmaker Samuel Gichigi has called for the amendment of the Constitution to reintroduce Assistant Ministers.
The current dispensation does not provide room for assistants to Cabinet Secretaries.
Speaking on Saturday during a political rally, the lawmaker argued that assigning Cabinet Secretaries assistants would ensure that there is no vaccum in the event the CS dies in office.
He cited the sudden death of Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery that occasioned the appointment of Education CS Fred Matiang'i to the Interior docket on an acting capacity.
“We need to change the Constitution to accommodate assistant ministers to avoid a gap like has happened where the president had to ask Education CS Fred Matiang’i to act as interior CS,” he said.
He further eulogized Nkaissery as a diligent civil servant, calling on Kenyans to maintain peace before, during and after the August polls in Nkaissery's honour.
