Bungoma Member of County Assembly (MCAs) are demanding to be exempted from having to pay parking fees within the county on the basis that they are working for the people of Kenya.

They believe the County Government is wrong for asking them to pay a SH100 fee daily, claiming that lawmakers should not have to follow the laws they create.

Chesikaki Ward Representative Ben Kipkut says forcing them to pay is a clear indication their legislative powers have been undermined.

Bungoma County Revenue Director Ambrose Makokha rejected the demand saying the only people exempted from the fee are Cabinet Secretaries and members of the diplomatic corps.

"MCAs, county ministers and chief officers must pay the parking fees. They are not immune to it," the Director said.

MCAs did not take kindly to the order and as a response threatened to use the legislative powers to reject a proposed County Finance Bill.

"The finance document has an ill motive towards MCAs who ar the legislative arm of the government. It does not capture our greivances. Why should we pass the Bill that will undermine us," Kipkut said.
