Three lawyers from Nyamira have challenged the government to fully compensate the 2007-08 post-election victims or face a court battle.
The ultimatum comes after the International Criminal Court on Tuesday ruled that Deputy President William Ruto and Joshua Sang had no case to answer for the crimes against humanity charges they were facing.
On Thursday, former LSK chairman Okong’o Omogeni, George Kerogo and Borabu MP Ben Momanyi expressed their disappointment in the treatment subjected to Gusii IDPs blaming the government for ‘unacceptable discrimination’.
“The government must now embark on a process of full compensation not only to IDPs in Nyamira but also across the country. It’s unacceptable that IDPs from Nyamira are subjected to unacceptable discrimination,” Omogeni said on behalf of the lawyers.
“They classified them as integrated IDPs and as people from Gusii, we have never understood. Time has come for the government to take full responsibility or face us in court,” he added.
Momanyi on his part accused the Ministry of Devolution of ‘sabotage’ and backed the idea of suing the government of Kenya for ‘unfairness’.
“The Ministry of Devolution was very biased by just giving some of them only Sh10,000 with others receiving nothing. If it now means to seek legal address, I am ready to help our brothers to get their right,” he said during Thursday’s meeting at Ekerenyo.
They gave the government one month to handle the complaints from Nyamira IDPs failure to which they will go to court.
