A section of leaders in Garissa County Goreale ward  Lagdera constituency have appealed to the county and national government to supply animal fodder as more livestock continue to die from the biting drought in the region.

Area MCA Abdurhaman Mohamed Idris said the national government should intervene to help suffering animals and residents.

“Drought is in its final stages.Hundreds of our livestock has died.Water tracking and food supply for both our animals and human beings should be increased before the situation worsen,” Idris said.

He decried that residents and herders walk for long distances in search of water and pasture.

Former area councilor Rashid Garane said herders have moved to the border of Somalia in search of water and pasture since water sources have dried up and pasture.

“The situation is worsening by the day. Intervention measures from the government and other aid agencies are needed to help safe lives of our people and livstock,” Garane said.

The worst hit areas by drought include Balambala, Lagdera and Dadaab sub counties, according to Garissa County National Drought Management Authority, NDMA.

The prolonged drought in the region has been caused to lack of long rains.
