Nyamira County legislators have condemned the killing of a father of five by an alleged police officer during a face-off between security personnel and irate residents.
The lawmakers, Shadrack Mose (Kitutu Masaba), Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango) and Ben Momanyi (Borabu) called for the suspect’s prosecution and an overhaul of the country security system.
Bonyunyu villagers were protesting the proposed implementation of a dam in the area when a confrontation between them and security officers ensued leading to the deceased’s death.
Condoling the family of the deceased, Patrick Onkangi at Bonyunyu village, the elected leaders said it was acceptable for the area security to shoot the dead unarmed person.
Mose threatened to table a motion in parliament over the killing if the suspect was not held to account for the murder adding that human life was sacred and could not be taken away recklessly.
Momanyi claimed the county security chief’s explanation on the killing could not wash since the victim who was not armed could not pose a threat to the alleged police officer.
He petitioned acting Interior ministry cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i to take action against the area security apparatus including ensuring justice for the deceased did.
Nyamoko who decried the precarious situation the bereaved family had suddenly been subjected to, announced underway plans by the elected leaders to assist the widow and orphaned children
