A section of North Rift leaders have condemned the Commission for University Education for ordering the closure of 10 Kisii University campuses.
The leaders from Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties vowed to resist any attempts to shut down and move Kisii University Eldoret Campus out of Uasin Gishu County.
Chesumei MP Elijah Langat and Uasin Gishu Senator Isaac Melly said the national government, through the Higher Education Loans Board, gives a lot of money to support students at the Kisii University Eldoret campus and any move to close the institution amounts to sabotaging development in the Rift Valley.
Melly vowed to use all means to ensure the learning institution is not closed nor shifted from Uasin Gishu observing that the campus had greatly assisted residents from the region to access higher education and shifting it out of the county is tantamount to undermining the rights of the people in Uasin Gishu and the entire region.
“The decision by CUE to close the campuses will cripple the development of education in the North Rift, and this is something that we shall not allow," said Langat
The 10 Kisii University campuses threatened with closure are those in Eldoret, Eldama Ravine, Nyamira, Kabarnet, Migori, Ogembo, Keroka, Kehancha, Kapenguria and Isebania.
Laikipia University's campus in Nyahururu also faces a similar fate.
In an inspection report submitted by CUE to Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’, CUE claimed the targeted campuses fell below the expected threshold.
