The leaders argued that the veterans languished in poverty yet they had spent most of their productive life fighting for the country’s independence.

Led by Lakeview MCA Simon Wanyoike, the leaders said it was the responsibility of the government to fight for them.

“Many cannot afford even the basic necessities like shelter, food and clothes. Many more have not been registered under the monthly stipend that is given to the aged. This is inhumane,” said Wanyoike.

Nominated MCA Esther Njeri Magere said that the government should form a taskforce to address the issues that were being raised by MauMau veterans.

“It’s only fair that the issues be addressed. It’s not fair for us to take for granted the price that the veterans paid for us to be free,” said Magere.

Maendeleo ya Wanawake chair Esther Nyokabi also called for the government to create a platform for the leaders to meet annually.

“It would be important if they can meet and remind themselves about the period they fought for freedom. This would also be a time to reflecting on how far the country has come and will also give them an experience to release the load that they have been carrying for so long,” added Nyokabi.
