Leaders from North Rift region last weekend met in Eldoret Town to address the problems facing maize farmers from the region.
The meeting was attended by representatives from Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi Counties.
The meeting was hosted by Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago and the main agenda was to discuss the measures to deal with deteriorating maize prices, high cost of farm inputs among other issues.
"We have agreed to set aside some funds in the 2015/2016 financial year to enable us to buy maize from our farmers in the next harvest in order to protect them from being exploited by greedy businessmen", Mandago Said.
Mandago indicated that the leaders had also resolved on working closely with the State to ensure that farmers are able to get subsidized farm inputs like fertilizers and seeds. "We are ready to work with the National Government to get a solution to this problem that farmers have to go through every year especially during planting and harvesting", added Mandago.
The leaders also agreed tothe formation of strong cooperatives to lobby for good maize prices among other issues.
