Leaders in Nakuru are calling for the decongestion of the Nakuru Men GK Prison.
This is after reports came out that the facility is hosting more than its capacity. According to sources within the prison, the facility has more than double its capacity.
“We are like more than 1500 inmates yet the capacity is around seven hundred,” a prison warder, who cannot be named, said.
The congestion has reportedly led to increased infection of Tuberculosis among the inmates.
Nakuru County Member of Parliament Mary Mbugua said that the concerned department should ensure the facility is not carrying more than it is supposed.
This, she said, will ensure inmates live in a good environment.
Nakuru politician, Mwithaga Mwangi speaking at London on Thursday, said that the government should ensure the requisite number of inmates is maintained in the prison.
“Some of the people being held there are serving terms for minor offences, that should not be case,”Mwangi said.
