Residents of Kisii County who were affected by the recent inter-ethnic flare-ups with their Transmara West neighbours expressed willingness to embrace peaceful co-existence.
Led by area deputy county commissionor,Mwachaunga Chaunga, (Kenyenya), George Bibao (Bokimonge), and border chairman, the residents met at Kiango and made resolutions. Ten people from Kisii and Transmara sustained serious arrow wounds in a flare up attributed to personal differences between two youths from both sides leading to the torching of a house.
During the meeting, Chaunga condemned the clashes saying they were started even before the culprits who set ablaze the house could be identified. He decried instigation of violence and killings by some area men at the behest of overwhelming emotions adding security agents should be allowed to execute their mandate. He advised them to develop a culture of maintaining cordial relations with their counterparts on a reciprocal basis.
Bibao announced plans to launch sporting activities between the two communities to foster peace along the often troubled border. According to him,the fact that winners in soccer or athletics will be awarded presents will be indicative of establishment of mutual interaction between the feuding communities.
An elder and chairman of the border petitioned the authorities to consider establishing a police post in the area to curb the occasional confrontations.
