Kamenu Ward MCA Chege Waithumbi has appealed to residents of Makongeni, Kiganjo, Kamenu and other surrounding estates to adhere to Kiambu county government's directive to use non-polythene garbage bags. Speaking on Thursday in Makongeni during a cleanup campaign initiated by Thika MP Patrick Wainaina, he said the directive will ensure that the environment remains clean. "The garbage bags are good as they can be collected on a weekly basis unlike the permanent stone bins that are only emptied after filling up thus causing health risks," said Chege. The MCA also noted that the completion of several dump sites like Kang'ooki which is currently under construction, will greatly ease the problem of waste disposal and management in the area. He also urged residents to clear thickets surrounding their houses saying they act as hide-outs of disease spreading agents."Many houses here are entirely surrounded by tall grass and other plants. Let's clear them and empty stagnant water near our houses to stay free from diseases," he said.
