Renowned human rights activist Okiya Omtatah has sued Interior CS Fred Matiang’i over the destruction of betting machines in the country.
A section of leaders from Kisii County have reacted defending Matiang’i saying the court should not stop the hard working Cabinet Secretary from destroying the betting machines across the country.
Bonchari MP John Oyioka accused Omtatah for defending illegal businesses in the country.
“Gambling and betting is illegal in this country. Crime is on the rise because youths have joined gang groups to steal from people so that they can get money to place bets and gamble. Matiang’i is doing a good work to ensure no illegal trade is taking place in the country,” he said.
Kisii County women representative Janet Ong’era said those opposed to Matiang’i destruction of betting machines are those supporting crime in this country.
She warned elected leaders against politicizing crime saying gambling should not be allowed in the country.
“Gambling has made several youths to be useless and unproductive. It is time the government should destroy all betting machines and shut down business joints,” she noted.
The MP called on youths to venture into constructive activities which may help them boost livelihoods.
