The decision by the ministry of education to deny Kisii University Vice-Chancellor Prof John Akama automatic renewal of his contract has set mixed reactions from within the region.
Despite campaigning vehemently for President Uhuru Kenyatta in Gusii, Akama was sidelined by Amina Mohammed as the restructuring of institutions continues.
A section of leaders has welcomed the decision while some others have condemned the government for 'unfair treatment.
"I want to register my displeasure to the ministry. Sidelining Akama was the worst mistake since he even openly campaigned for the government," said George Mosiori, a nominated Jubilee MCA from Nyamira.
Youth leader Brian Mamboleo said: "We urge the president to step up and rescue the VC. He has done his best in improving the institution."
But others insisted that Akama's time in the institution was over, accusing him of incompetence and gross violation of the constitution.
"This is the best move. At least the institution can now grow without those ethnic hegemonies," said Jeff Ongoro, a former leader, and MCA at Kanyaluo ward.
Akama has been serving as Vice Chancellor since 2013 when President Mwai Kibaki elevated the institution to a fully fledged university.
