Leaders in Nakuru County now want the motion that was tabled before the Nakuru County Government regarding the monkey menace revisited. Gilgil MCA Jane Wanjiru Ngugi had tabled the motion following frequent monkey attacks at her area. Ngugi cited that she would table the motion in the assembly again following a collapsed attempt earlier. “Our children cannot go to school in peace. They are attacked by monkeys which move in groups of at least 200 males. Whenever we go for shopping, they always attack and steal the things from us. Men are forced to sleep in shifts to guard our gardens from being attacked,” she said. Ngugi cited that they had tried to involve the Kenya Wildlife Society to help them but their cries were disregarded. “We were informed that we were the ones who had encroached on the wildlife territory,” she added. MCA Simon Wanyoike wanango cited that there had also been attacks in Mai Mahiu area where children were also beaten up by the animals. “We have had serious cases of monkey attacks and we do not know what diseases are carried by them. The animals enter even the kitchens and steal the sufurias which are laden with food. We need Kenya Wildlife Services to control them since they become rowdy and unruly when attacked,” he added. MCA Esther Njeri cited that there was need to create a buffer zone for the animals. She cited the recent cases in Lakeview Estate in Nakuru where a pregnant woman was attacked by baboons. “Its by Gods grace that she did not die. There is need to ensure the residents of their safety,” she added.
