Members of Boards of Govenors, Parents and Teachers Associations and Principals in Wajir County have threatened to shut down all learning institutions following the transfer of non-local teachers.
Led by Mohamed Nur the leaders demanded action by the government or they will shut down all secondary and primary schools in Wajir County.
Speaking after a meeting held at Wajir county guest house on Tuesday, Mr Nur said the few available teachers cannot meet the demand.
The group noted that the few remaining teachers will not go to class if government does not take drastic measures following the mass exodus of non-local teachers.
“The teachers have vowed to keep off the educational institutions if the government fails to address the teachers’ shortage in the county.”
“Following the mass exodus of non-local teachers, some schools have been left with only one local teacher. A single teacher is not capable of handling an entire school,” Mr Nur said.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) had transferred non-local teachers following a terror attack on three teachers at Qarsa Primary School a month ago.
Close to 200 non-local teachers have left the county due to security concerns.
The stakeholders have also threatened to sue TSC for failing to protect the rights of pupils and denying them the right to education.
