Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Monday, the chairman of Nyando Human Rights Network, Washington Obura said that community in Nyando was living in fear due to constant attacks by their Nandi neighbours.

Obura stated that five people were nursing injuries at various hospitals while another 60 had been displaced due to the attacks.

“Two days ago, houses belonging to non Kalenjins were broken into and sugarcane plantations burnt by youths,” he said.

He pointed out that the internally displaced victims are now camping at Kopere and Chemelil roundabout after losing property worth Ksh80 million.

The chairman urged peace ambassadors who have been attending reconciliatory meetings to speed up the peace process and agree on the ways to prevent the radical youth from obstructing security agencies from discharging their duties.

Obura challenged the peace ambassadors to cooperate with both County and national governments in maintaining security and sharing information.

The two communities have been at loggerheads over boundary issues.

The chairman urged the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights to intervene in handling the volatile border issue.
