Wanyoike noted that most pit latrines in many schools are full, hence exposing children to danger.

Wanyoike who also serves as Lakeview Member of County Assembly wants the government to replace the toilets with septic tanks which use running water.

He argued that the normal water closet toilets are not deep and hence children cannot fall inside as it has been the case with latrines.

“We have done our spot check and the toilets are collapsing and are full of filth. We have witnessed cases where students have fallen inside and got stuck. Owing to the fact that the toilets were constructed long time ago most of them are not fit for use,” he added.

His views were echoed by Nakuru County Assembly, Leader of the Majority, Samuel Waithuke, who challenged the county government to ensure that there was running water in all public schools in the county.

“It is a shame that we do not have even hand washing points for our children who cannot clean up once they are from the latrines. The only solution is demolish them and build better toilets,” he added
