[A farmer lifts his goat shoulder-high as he flees from raging floods. Some schools in Wajir on Friday had learning disrupted due to floods.] asdfghjklkenya.worldpress.comLearning in some schools in Wajir County has been disrupted following heavy rains that caused floods in the county.
Most flood water sweeping across the devolved unit originates from Ethiopia, authorities said.
The floods have dealt a blow to the county that is still grappling with the loss of thousands of heads of cattle after a prolonged drought.
An assistant chief, Abdikadir Dayib who hails along the Kenya-Ethiopia border said on Friday that the most affected area was Laga, since Laga stream which originates from Ethiopia cuts through the area.
He also said business activities in Buna town had been affected because of the floods.
“The heavy rains have greatly affected learning activities in the area,” Buna Primary School head teacher Abdullahi Hassan told the press on Friday.
“Today (Friday) pupils failed to report to school.” he added.
More than 500 households are reported to have been affected by the raging floods with a section of the bridge connecting Buna and Moyale having been swept away.
The damaging of the bridge has affected movement of vehicles from Kenya to Ethiopia.
The floods come less than a month after a devastating dry spell that led to the loss of thousands of heads of cattle in the arid county mostly occupied by pastoralist communities.
