The situation is no different in Garissa University, with learning grinding to a halt as the lecturers stay out of class.

In a statement by UASU Garissa University Chapter Secretary Bichang’a Nyaigoti, the lecturers are staying away from classes as a show of solidarity with their colleagues.

According to Nyaigoti, The Inter-Public Universities Council Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) has been dilly dallying and has not presented a reasonable counter offer since the union tabled its proposal in 2012.

“The UASU GUC Chapter, in a show of solidarity with other varsity chapters, is fully participating in the ongoing UASU strike in all public universities,” read part of the statement.

The lecturers are holding out for the implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement that was signed in 2012, which if implemented will see the lowest paid lecturer earn a gross salary of Sh350,000, with a full professor earning Sh1,500,000.

The situation in many public universities over the past two weeks has been unbearable for many students, with management of certain institutions opting to close their institutions awaiting a resolve.
