Several schools in Kibera remained closed on Monday following the resumption of the weekly protests by the opposition leaders and supporters demanding reforms in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Teachers reportedly advised parents to keep their children away from school as a precaution in a bid to avoid the replica of what transpired during the last demonstration in the area that saw students affected.
Some of the schools that remained under lock and key included Olympic Primary, Ayany, Old Kibera, Raila Educational Centre, and Christco Educational Centre. Most of the schools affected are concentrated in Gatwekera, Olympic, Ayany, Karanja, and Fort Jesus villages.
According to a teacher from Olympic Primary School, who requested anonymity, few pupils had reported to school early on Monday but were later collected by their parents after tension rose for fear of possible riots.
"On Sunday evening at Kamukunji Grounds, some politicians had publicly announced to parents and teachers to keep children away from school. Today most of them did not report while the few who reported were later taken back home by the parents," he said.
At Chritsco Educational Centre, the administration expressed concerns over the security of pupils especially those from high risk villages.
"We have received a few pupils especially those who reside in Dagoretti, Woodley, and Jamhuri. Unfortunately, it was not possible for those from areas like Gatwekera, Olympic, and Makina considering that such areas pose a great danger especially during such kind of demonstrations," said Maurice Kutswa, the head teacher at Chritsco Educational Centre.
