Learning in public primary schools in Nyamira County are still paralysed as the teachers and their unions ignored a court order to get back to class.

In Makairo Primary School, pupils who reported to school in the morning got a rude shock as teachers kept off their respective duty stations.

Many pupils have been forced to go back home earlier than usual as teachers downed their tools following a directive by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) to keep off from school.

According to one of the parents, Jared Maisiba who accompanied his children to school said children mostly from low-income families were the majority in the school and were forced to go home early as there was no learning.

”Our children will suffer if learning will continue to be paralysed in public schools,” he said.

He pleaded with the teachers unions to get into agreement so that learning can continue and end to the teachers strike in Kenya in all public schools.

However, parents with students in public secondary schools said that they will not release their children to go back to boarding schools until the teachers strike ends, since they will be faced with financial challenges as far as transport is concerned and the security of their children in the absence of teachers in schools.

On the other hand, learning in private schools in the county which were opened today continued with smooth operations.
