The Governor, who in his efforts to fight illicit drinks launched a rehabilitation programme where addicts receive Sh400 daily after doing menial jobs for the county, has been under pressure to suspend the programme on grounds it is ineffective and a wastage of resources.

The fiercest critic of the programme has been Kiambu Women Representative Gathoni wa Muchomba who has trashed the initiative, saying it was creating more drunkards.

"When these youths receive money in the evening they end up using it to consume alcohol. The county ought to take them to rehabilitation centres where they are counselled and equipped with skills for living productively," said Gathoni, who runs 'Mama Care' initiative which rehabilitates alcoholics.

On Sunday, Waititu told off the Women Rep and asked her to leave him alone and instead focus on her legislative duties.

"Those people castigating me over the programme should come up with their own projects. This is mine and they should leave it alone," he said speaking at Ngegu during a fundraiser.

"The money we are using to rehabilitate these addicts is the money we collect in form of taxes and thus it belongs to them. No leader has been asked to contribute towards the programme," he added.
