A short while ago, you would rarely hear about a strike and even so, it will be for a serious state matter that we all agreed it was worth striking for. 

Lecturers all over the country have today commenced a strike that will see learning paralysed in our institutions of higher learning. 

The University Academic Staff Union yesterday called upon all its members to boycott  and abstain from work until their 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement is honored by the government.

The dons want their salaries and allowances to be harmonized with that of their colleagues in the public sector. The CBA they are demanding for was supposed to take effect in July last year.

UASU Leadership had issued a seven day strike notice last week Wednesday and upon expiry yesterday, they had no choice but commence the industrial action.

While declaring the start of the strike, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wesonga accused the Inter-Public Universities Council Consultative Forum of lacking good will in negotiations with the government that would have provided a lasting solution to the long overdue stalemate. 

He also condemned the killing of the Meru University Student Leader, Evans Njoroge.
