The lecturers’ strike is set to continue for longer, after the lecturers issued new demands ahead of a meeting to be held today, Monday.

UASU wants documents regarding the implementation of the 2013-2017 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) tabled before they sign any agreement to return back to work.

In addition, they want protection from victimization of any individual.

According to UASU secretary-general Constantine Wasonga, the national executive committee will meet on Wednesday to give its verdict on the outcome of Monday’s discussions.

“I urge our members to disregard communication from the IPUCCF and remain on strike. In particular, do not teach students,” said Dr Wasonga in a statement as quoted by the Nation.

He added: “Uasu clarifies that IPUCCF and the government have no powers whatsoever to call off the lecturers’ strike. The responsibility of calling off or suspending a strike is vested in the secretary-general, exercised in accordance with the constitution of the union,” said Dr Wasonga.

“The forum and the government understand clearly that the strike may not be called off until Uasu is fully satisfied and has fully verified that the objectives for which the strike was called have been fulfilled.”

The dons have been out of class for a month now, paralyzing learning in 31 public universities.

Already most of the universities have been closed, waiting on the direction the strike takes before they resume learning.
