University dons have downed their tools. This is despite calls by Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i that they should allow talks take effect, before paralysing learning in public schools.The lecturers had threatened to kick off their strike, if the government fails to implement their 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), signed on March 13, 2017, which saw a 54-day strike which started on January 13, come to an end.The CBA which offers lecturers a 17.5 per cent increase in basic salaries and a 3.9 per cent rise in house allowances across the board, was to take effect from Friday last week.Kenya University Staff Union Association (KUSUA) secretary general Charles Mukhwaya has dismissed claims that the government has already channeled a tune of Sh4.7 billion for lecturers' pay hike.Addressing the press as the strike kicked off, Monday July 3, he also dismissed claims that it was agreed the CBA be implemented in two faces, saying the government decided to blatantly violate the agreement .Mukhwaya has maintained that dons will not accept anything less than Sh10 billion, wired at once in their accounts.
