Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) have threatened to down their tools come January 11 if the government does not implement the 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The unions on Friday issued a 21-day strike notice saying university staff are underpaid and overworked.
According to citizentv.co.ke, UASU national chairman, Muga K’Olale, and KUSU secretary general, Dr Charles Mukhwaya said lecturers could no longer bear the brunt unless the government implements the deal.
“The government has been evading us for the past six years. We can no longer wait,” said Dr Mukhwaya as quoted by citizentv.co.ke.
The unions are demanding a pay rise saying an assistant professor should be earning a minimum of Sh350,000 and a maximum of Sh1.5 million.
They also backed the ongoing doctors’ strike urging them not to give up until their demands are fulfilled.
They noted that if their dons demands are not met, they will withdraw their services from the country’s 44 public universities.
