University lecturers have warned of a protracted strike until the government implements the 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary General Constantine Wasonga claimed that the government was insensitive to their plight by reneging on the deal they struck

“We will only return to work once the government assures us of increased salary, house allowance and improving working conditions in public universities,” he maintained.

“We are prepared to have this strike go on forever until our demands are met” said Wasonga when the union officials spoke at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu on Wednesday.

Prof. Muga Kolale, UASU Chairman said some vice chancellors were dealing a blow to their quest for better remunerations singling out Maseno University’s VC Prof Julius Nyabundi whose institution was running as the strike enters second week.

Maseno University, he said, was among the universities yet to  honor the internal CBA which seeks bettering learning conditions in the institutions and wondered why its management had opened the school.

University of Nairobi, Kenyatta, Jommo Kenyatta and Jaromogi Oginga Odinga Universities were the only universities that had completed negotiating for the internal CBA’s.
