University lecturers will no longer be hired on permanent basis.

This is according to Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi.

Matiangi on Wednesday asked the management of all public universities to stop immediately the permanent-and-pensionable basis of hiring university staff.

He said the government can no longer sustain their incomes.

While addressing Vice Chancellors at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi, the CS said all university staff should be hired on contract basis and promised to initiate a cleanup in all the public universities which have inherited staff from previous administrations.

“University employees should now be hired on contract basis. This business of hiring every university worker even those working in the kitchen should come to an end,” said Matiangi.

He however said that the new regulations will not affect those already employed.
