Hundreds of fans of kikuyu benga music turned up during a fundraiser to support legendary musician Wanganangu wa Njeri at Orange House in Thika on Sunday night.
Wanganangu was born in 1930 and lost his eyesight in 1936. He however composed popular songs but despite the success, he has been living in deplorable conditions.
The musician has been begging to get his daily bread.
"I have been moving around with my accordion entertaining people who in turn give Sh5 or 10 but sometimes nothing," lamented Wanganangu.
In the funds drive dubbed 'Ngogoyo 237: The cry of Wanganangu', his fans contributed generously to provide him with a shelter as the house he is living in today is not only leaking but could also get demolished anytime.
"My house leaks when it rains but worse it is on a road reserve and could get demolished anytime by the county government,” said Wanganangu, a resident of Muchatha.
Musicians Peter Kigia, Wahome wa Maingi, Musaimo and many more were at the event which was popularised by a local radio station.
