The leopard was found to have eaten 12 goats in the area, with some of the attacked goats left with their stomachs open, bloody necks and with missing limbs.

One victim of the attack, Edward Njoroge, lost seven goats at one go.

“I woke up in the morning and found my goats dead and strewn all over the structure I close them in,” he said.

Njoroge said the goats were his means of making a livelihood and feeding his family. He asked the government through the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to compensate them for their loss.

Loice Mwatia also lost five goats after the leopard attack. She said as a family they had planned to slaughter one goat for the Christmas festivities and also sell the other four to help them in paying school fees in January.

Area assistant chief Rahab Wambui confirmed the incident and visited the affected homes.

Wambui said, “It is not the first time a leopard has attacked animals in this village, and we have alerted KWS officers severally, and they have come and collected information but they have never done anything to catch the leopard on the prowl.”

She expressed her worries that the leopard might even attack a child for food if the KWS fails to catch it and keep it far away from people’s homesteads.
