Agriculture Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe says most farmers in Trans-Nzoia and North Rift are likely to record huge losses due to the ongoing rains.
The drop in maize production has been estimated to be 9 million bags less compared to what was harvested in 2016 due to post-harvest losses.
PS Lesiyampe says the country has not been producing sufficient maize to sustain the demand in the last few years.
He has urged stakeholders to come up with measures to support farmers in producing enough maize for consumption as well as export.
The ongoing rains in Trans Nzoia and North Rift regions have also disrupted maize drying resulted to numerous post-harvest losses
