[Photo: the-star.co.ke]An old Swahili adage goes, 'ukiona cha mwenzio chanyolewa, chako tia maji'.The proverb which is common in Kenya's political scene, loosely translated means, that when you see your friend's head being shaved, wet yours because you could be next.To paraphrase, the saying, simply warns that when you see something bad happening to someone that you are close to, it is good to brace yourself for the worst because it might affect you directly. Where is all this taking us to?Well, on Sunday NASA leader Raila Odinga 'spilt the beans' on the political machinations that took place behind the closed curtains which culminated to the formation of a grand-coalition government following the disputed 2007 General election.Raila, perhaps tired and angered by Deputy President William Ruto's daily rhetoric that he is clamouring for a coalition government, revealed that it was actually Ruto who introduced the coalition government in Kenya during the mediation talks between PNU and ODM.He went on to say that Ruto had sensed he was going to be jailed by the International Criminal Court and he was looking for an escape route. According to Raila, Ruto felt he would be vindicated if he were in government."Ruto was part of the team that negotiated. He was the one who proposed the coalition government," Raila said as quoted by the Star, which exposed Ruto's underbelly to the amusement of thousands of NASA supporters who had attended NASA's Sunday rally in Mombasa. As expected, Ruto has since brushed it off, but this has undoubtedly left an egg on his face. Whether he will tone down on this 'nusu-mkate' thing is another thing. But a valuable lesson ought to be to NASA co-principals, whom Raila might 'shave bluntly' in future in case of a fallout. Who knows, we might just get to know who was behind Raila's withdrawal from the forthcoming polls through Raila himself!
