Kisumu Senator Prof Anyang Nyong’o has welcomed the idea of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct ODM party primaries.
Nyong’o said the party primaries process can only be done in a transparent way by the electoral body.
He said ODM party had intention of using IEBC for its primaries in 2013 but that was declined.
Nyong’o noted that in 2013, they approached IEBC to conduct the nominations but their chairman Isaac Hassan turned it down.
“We have been ready for IEBC to conduct our nominations. Let them come over and carry out a credible nomination,” he said.
Speaking in Kisumu during a funds drive for a women group, the Senator said nothing bars IEBC from conducting party primaries noting that it has done so for many organisations in the country.
“We have seen IEBC conducting elections for LSK, UoN and other organizations. Surely, no law bars them from conducting for political parties,” he said.
Nyong’o said the IEBC body is set for restructuring and will be credible enough to help in conducting party primaries.
He urged the electorate to take the opportunity to register for voters’ card to be able to participate in the electoral process.
“Let our people come out and register for IDs and voters card. This is the only weapon to confront elections and make wiser decisions,” he said.
