The MP says that clan endorsement being done by some elders in the region is against the constitution in terms of democracy.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Sunday live interview, the MP said that Kenyans should be given the freedom to select and elect the leaders they want.

The lawmaker stated that imposition of leaders to the people will ‘kill’ the democratic space gained over the years.

“Clan elders in North Eastern and other parts of the country should stop imposing leaders on the people and instead allow Kenyans to choose and elect the leaders they want,” he said during the interview.

Aden noted that the region (North Eastern), will continue to lag behind in terms of development if clans continue imposing leaders on the people.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker said that the act of imposing leaders is undemocratic.

“We have the constitution that gives the people the power to choose the leaders they want,” he added.

Clans play a key role in selection of leaders in some counties within North Eastern Kenya.

The clans root for rotation leadership so that each and every clan can have a representation in terms of politics and leadership.

Clan elders in Wajir, Marsabit and Mandera counties are currently making endorsement on who they consider right to vie for various seats in the forthcoming 2017 general elections.
