Human Rights activist, Zedi Mbadi said the refugees will be safer under the hands of the UN which already has a body which handles refugees.

Mbadi stated that this will enable refugees gain more from foreign aid which the UN will advocate more for than when the government does. She also pointed out that Kenyan Forces has a history of non-tolerance which they may likely handle the refugees in a manner that will infringe on their rights.

“The UN should take responsibility of the repatriation of the refugees and not Kenya. Letting the government through the Kenyan forces handle such a vulnerable group like this can be a disaster especially that not all of them will be willing or ready to leave,” she said.

She also appealed to the government to let the UN fully handle the exercise.

Mbadi faulted the government for failing to meet their promises on the IDP’s saying it would be a nightmare for the refugees.

“The Kenyan government up to now have not compensated and ensured the IDP’s have been catered for. How will they manage to handle over 500,000 refugees?” She said.

Kenya is set to repatriate refugees under claims of security threats.
