Parents have been warned against imposing careers on their children rather than allowing them to find adequate information before choosing courses to pursue in college.
Speaking on Wednesday at Gusii Stadium during a career day organised by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Walter Okibo the deputy director of the institutions' Kisii branch, challenged parents to let their children visit universities to be guided on courses to choose.
“Students are supposed to visit higher learning institutions so that they can be guided on how to choose their courses which will help them in future," said Okibo.
He blamed some parents who force their children to take specific courses without prior knowledge of the requirements of the courses for the poor performance and drop-out rate of some students.
“Parents should stop forcing their children to do certain courses that they feel are attractive to them rather than to their children," he added.
According to the academician, forcing students to do courses they don't fit into their abilities and interests has led to poor performance of many students saying it takes a longer time for such students to adapt.
