The recent statistics on HIV/Aids is shocking. A recent research conducted by Kenyatta National Hospital, KNH indicated that many Kenyans, around 800,000 do not know their HIV status.
This, if analysed properly, would reveal a huge number of new infections. Kenya was ranked 4th worldwide in HIV infections in 2013.
That translated to about 1.6 million people infected with HIV/Aids. The reason why HIV prevalence is rocket high is the availability of Anti-retroviral drugs, ARVs.
People who use ARVs appear healthy and therefore, have a higher chance of passing on the virus to unsuspecting victims.
In 2003, 6000 people could access Anti-retroviral treatment, ART but this has since risen up to 596,600 adults and 60,000 children in 2013.
The huge number of people who do not know their status pose a great danger.
Let us not relent on the fight against HIV/Aids. As a nation, we have made great steps in the past to curb HIV/Aids menace and this is not the time to give up.
Let us get tested and know our HIV status.
