Economist David Ndii has written to African Commission on Human and People’s Rights requesting for secession, a move that could see Kenya split into two should it go through.

A 1986 Act by the commission allows members to apply for secession based on discrimination and oppression in an existing country.

And in his petition, Ndii, a close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga wants the commission to allow a section of Kenya to form her own country.

“Successive Kenyan governments have perpetuated a culture of impunity through rigged elections that denies Kenyans from other tribes the ability to self- determine and even grown economically,” he says.

His petition further says: “In the wake of a rigged 2017 elections and subsequent killings, it is time to chart our own course as the people who believe in change.”

If the petition goes through, counties from Western, Nyanza and Coastal regions could be consolidated to form another country.

Article 20 of African Charter on Human and People’s Right (1986) allows a creation of semi-autonomous states based on oppression and segregation by rulers in an existing state.
