Bahati Member of Parliament Kimani Ngunjiri has proposed the scraping of the deputy governors post from the devolved system of county governments.
Ngunjiri says that deputy governors have no meaningful duties despite being paid huge sums of money,
The MP said that the constitution should be amendment to abolish the deputy governor’s post saying that some deputy governors have been the cause of chaos in some county governments across the country.
Speaking Monday afternoon at Nakuru town, Ngunjiri said that the governors are able to run affairs of county governments without the help of their deputies.
He added that the money being used in paying the deputy governors can be directed to other important issues that need to be addressed in counties.
“I have always asked myself what work the deputy governors do in counties. Why should the country continue paying people who do not work when that money can be directed to other important issue in the counties?" he posed.
He added that the senate must sit down and think about this issue because the existence of deputy governors has created animosity in some of the counties.
Ngunjiri called on governors not to be intimidated by their deputies as they were elected to sere the people and not the interests of their deputies.
“Some deputy governors are power hungry and they want to hold the governor hostage so that he doesn’t perform but I want to call on all governors to stay put because they are the bosses, if the deputy governors want power they should wait for 2017 which is just around the corner,” he said.
