The Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) Nakuru branch has been forced to rent chairs to deal with the influx of pupils during the school holiday.

Purity Kavuri, the librarian in charge says the management has been forced to rent the chairs after a promise by the county government to buy chairs failed to materialise.

“We were hoping the county government would help us acquire more chairs for the library. They had promised to honour a pledge they had made before the August holiday but since they didn’t deliver, I’ve been forced to procure chairs on a temporary basis,” said Kavuri.

Speaking on Friday, Kavuri revealed that the library in consultation with the head office in Nairobi had hired a hundred and fifty seats from a local events company.

“Those chairs are not enough as you can see but at least they are alleviating the situation a bit,” said Kavuri.

However, students could still be found seated along the staircase and others standing along the wall.

“If I arrive later than 8:30am, I am sure of not getting a seat so I always arrive early,” said one secondary school student.

He added that by eight in the morning, there usually is a large number of users waiting to enter the library.

In April last year, the county director of education had promised to assist the library acquire chairs although the service is not yet devolved.

“Library services are not devolved but since the facility is serving our people, we can always chip in and assist,” the director had said.

Efforts by the librarian to get in touch with the person who had been contact person in getting the seats through the phone have allegedly been unsuccessful.
