A man was struck to death by lightning and his wife seriously injured on Friday. The two were sheltering under a tree at around 5pm while it was raining heavily.

Lightning struck the couple in Magombani Village, Matuga, Kwale County.

County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo said the two decided to take shelter under a tree when rain started while they were coming from their farm.

"They were coming from their shamba when the incident occurred," he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.

Mr Karuku said the woman was taken to Kwale Hospital for treatment in a critical condition.

In the past few weeks, heavy rains across the country has caused a lot of causalities, ranging from flooding, lightening and collapsing of buildings. 

This morning, a building collapsed at Ruai in east of Nairobi. At least two people were reported dead as operation to rescue others is ongoing. 

On March 2, a woman and her two children were killed when they were struck by lightning in Kamujwa Village, Tharaka Nithi County.

On 3rd January, one child and an adult died while another person was rushed in hospital after they were struck by lightning in Turi, Molo sub-county.

It is necessary to take the necessary precautions during this heavy rains time. One should not take shelter under a tree because of the lightening risks.
