As the August general election date inches closer, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials have named Likoni as one of the areas likely to experience violence during the exercise.
The officials, who spoke during a forum at the Likoni Social Hall, said the area’s security has proven to be volatile considering the increased rates of crime witnessed in the recent past. A few weeks ago, there were leaflets warning non-residents to vacate the area before the August general election. A number of leaders from both the opposition and ruling party came out to condemn the circulation of the leaflets although no arrests have been yet. Likoni deputy county commissioner Erick Wamulevu revealed that Likoni has been listed among the hotspots of violence.“Likoni has been mapped to be one of the hotspots areas. We have been supplied with enough apparatus to curb the same, we are asking you aspirants to be cautious enough or else you will rot at Shimo La Tewa,” said Wamulevu, as quoted by Baraka FM. He also said that the national government has been information about possible violence in the area, adding that security agencies are committed to ensuring peace prevails.
