The operators on Tuesday claimed that police officers used live bullets to disperse them after they stormed Likoni police station to demand the release of their colleagues who had been arrested for operating without licenses.

The riders claimed that the police actions had resulted into injuries, giving an example of a woman who is said to have been shot in the abdomen by a stray bullet.

According to one of the bodaboda riders who spoke on condition of anonymity, the officers used excessive force on the protesters.

“Some of the bodaboda operators may have sustained injuries as a result of the live bullets and the tear gas that police fired. One woman was rushed to the hospital after she was shot by a live bullet,” said the rider.

Likoni OCPD Willy Simba however dismissed the claims, saying his officers only used tear gas.

Mr Simba said investigations will be conducted to establish the circumstances that led to the woman being shot.

“We only used teargas to disperse the rioters and no firearms were discharged. However, we are going to launch investigations into the matter,” said Mr Simba.

The police chief however said the crackdown would continue to rid the area of unregistered motor cycles.
