Police in Mombasa have launched an investigation into the leadership of Masjid Maulana Mosque in Majengo Mapya area, Likoni.

This comes after a section of youth, led by Mohammed Abukakar, stormed the mosque on Friday, disrupting prayers.

Confirming the incident, Likoni District Criminal Investigation Officer boss David Siele said they have launched investigations into the matter.

“We will engage several security apparatus to investigate and come up with appropriate findings. We will know what is happening in time," he said.

The rival group, which comprised of youth drawn from Majengo and Kisauni, is said to have forced its way into the mosque, wanting to install their new imam to lead the summon.

However, their mission was unsuccessful as they were repulsed by the members who were holding prayers at the mosque.

The mosque secretary general, Ustadh Juma Idd, condemned the move, saying the group which interrupted the prayers had a hidden agenda, adding that they are a threat to the security of Mombasa and the entire nation.

“We have seen several mosques in Mombasa radicalising youth. This people wanted to take over the mosque with ill motives. We cannot allow that as there are steps and procedures to follow. We have written to security personnel to investigate the matter,” said Juma.
