Elizabeth Mukora, the Sub County's agricultural officer, told the farmers that some of the herbicides destroy the crops and they also pose a great risk to human health.

Speaking to the press in Limuru town on Tuesday, Mukora said that most of the farmers in Limuru Sub County and the surrounding environs usually have a habit of spraying the herbicides in their farms even before the planting seasons.

"Using herbicides has been researched and proven that using them with the fertilisers is very harmful to the crops and also poisonous,” said Mukora.

Mukora added that some of the herbicides that the farmers use are meant to destroy the grass and not weeds such as blackjack.

"Most farmers do not know how to differentiate the herbicides that are meant to kill the grass and the ones that are meant to kill the weeds like blackjack. Most of them end up using the one that is meant to kill grass without knowing,” said Mukora.

The agricultural officer said that some of the herbicides that the farmers use reduce soil fertility by killing micro-organisms that are of great help when it comes to creating nutrients.

"We are strongly advising all the farmers to ensure that they stop the habit of using the herbicides,” said Mukora.
