In an effort to ensure a reliable supply of water in Limuru, the area agricultural department has embarked on a water harvesting procedure.
Speaking from her office on Thursday, the Limuru Sub-County district agricultural officer, Ann Koimburi said the department had started the water pan harvesting project because of the inconsistent rains in the sub-county. She says that situation has causes lack of sufficient water for farming.
Koimburi said that small horticultural farmers in the area were disappointed that the heavy rains this season were not adequate.
She added that her office in liaison with the sub-county finance office, the CDF and other stakeholders had taken the initiative to help farmers come up with a way to salvage the situation.
"Two weeks ago, the agriculture office held a demonstration at Kibera Cut Flowers, a self-help group in Bibirioni Ward. This was attended by many horticultural farmers in Limuru Sub-County,” she said.
Koimburi encouraged the farmers in the region to take up horticulture as it is, allegedly, a profitable business venture.
She also urged the farmers to incorporate water pan harvesting and drip irrigation in their farming methods to supplement rain water.
“The water would be used more efficiently to cover bigger portions of land, therefore producing higher yields,” she added.
